Fairfield councilman off life support

ASSOCIATED PRESS

7:18 a.m. September 5, 2008

FAIRFIELD – A Fairfield councilman who has been brain dead since being shot in the head four days ago has been taken off life support.

A nursing supervisor at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek says 22-year-old Matt Garcia died Friday morning at 6 a.m. His body is now at the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office.

Meanwhile, police continue searching for the gunman, who fired multiple shots at Garcia while he was talking in a friend's driveway Monday night. The unindentified suspect is described as a man in his late teens or early 20s who left the scene in a mid-90s, American model sedan.

A prayer service was held Thursday night for the young elected official, and a viewing is scheduled for Monday at his former high school.
