MEXICO CITY – Hurricane Hernan weakened to Category 1 strength in the eastern Pacific on Sunday as it lumbered over cooler waters far from land, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Hernan had sustained winds near 85 mph (140 kph), down from almost 120 mph (195 kph) a day earlier when it was a major, Category 3 hurricane, the center reported. Forecasters said the fifth hurricane of the season posed no threat to land.
The storm was located far off Mexico coast, about 1,235 miles (1,985 kilometers) west of the tip of the Baja California peninsula, and was moving on a northwest course farther out to sea, the center added.
Forecasters predicted that Hernan would likely drop below hurricane strength on Monday.
Storms are classified as hurricanes with winds of 74 mph (119 kph) or more.
