MEXICO CITY – Hurricane Hernan formed far off Mexico's Pacific coast on Friday and is expected to remain far from land, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
The former tropical storm is the fifth hurricane of the eastern Pacific season.
Hernan's winds reached almost 85 mph (120 kph) Friday afternoon. Storms are classified as hurricanes with winds of 74 mph (119 kph) or more.
The hurricane may strengthen slightly over the next two days before moving over cooler waters and weakening, forecasters at the hurricane center said.
Hernan's center was located about 910 miles (1,465 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula and was moving west out to sea.
