SHORT TAKES: CITY EDITION
Auditions planned for 'Guys and Dolls Jr.' show

UNION-TRIBUNE

September 4, 2008

ROLANDO PARK: The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center will hold auditions this month for its production of “Guys and Dolls Jr.”

Actors ages 4 to 19 can audition Sept. 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the center, 6805 University Ave., just west of the La Mesa city limits.

Auditions are by appointment only – call (619) 269-1540 – but everyone who auditions will perform in the show. Callbacks will follow on Sept. 18, and rehearsals will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Performances will be held Dec. 10-14 in the Kroc Center's state-of-the-art theater.

Together We Grow gets monetary boost

SAN DIEGO: A nonprofit has come to the rescue of a San Diego after-school program that caters to severely disabled youth.

Together We Grow was on the brink of discontinuing its after-school program because of a pending 10 percent cut in MediCal funding. Together We Grow is the largest pediatric care center in California and has locations in San Diego and Oceanside.

However, the San Diego Regional Center, a nonprofit that provides services for children with developmental disabilities, will help Together We Grow pay for its four-hour after-school program for the next six months.

The center receives much of its funding from the Department of Developmental Services, which is not facing the same budget cuts from Medi-Cal, the state health care program for low-income and disabled residents.

Together We Grow's program is equipped to help medically fragile children who need around-the-clock assistance from trained nurses.

“We knew that we would have a hard time finding other resources for these kids,” said Carlos Flores, executive director of the San Diego Regional Center.
