Legends shines as La Costa’s ‘other’ dining venue

Much has been written here about Blue Fire Grill, the great flagship dining venue at the beautiful La Costa Resort & Spa. But there is another dining option at La Costa – Legends Bistro – that is family friendly, chic, yet casual and offers delightful breakfasts, lunches and dinners every day of the week.

At Legends Bistro, you can dine inside and enjoy a cozy and inviting ambiance created by dark woods and flickering candlelight at night. If you prefer, you can dine on the fabulous patio that overlooks La Costa’s world-famous golf course. The patio is absolutely lovely – very Mediterranean, with lots of umbrellas and a fireplace. The staff at Legends Bistro is gearing up for Thanksgiving, when from 11:30 until 4 p.m. they will present the acclaimed La Costa Thanksgiving Buffet. It will be a bounty of great food, including pots of seafood and salads, cheeses, tapas, hot side dishes, carved roast turkey and roast prime rib, desserts and more. The price is $58 for adults and $22 for kids ages 5-12. Kids under age 5 dine at no charge.

Legends Bistro features a breakfast buffet on Saturdays and Sunday with an ample variety that will hit the spot. On Sundays, they also add an omelet station. The regular breakfast menu is available every morning, as well, with items such as corned beef hash and eggs, create-your-own omelets, eggs Benedict and French brioche toast. At lunch, many golfers and guests enjoy the lovely ambiance while savoring soups and salads and entrées such as chicken bolognese, the La Costa burger, Chopra Dahl (a vegetarian favorite from the spa menu), chicken curry, and soy ginger-glazed ahi. Dinner is a special time at Legends, especially if you dine on Wednesday nights, when a three-course live Maine lobster dinner goes for just $40; on most Thursday nights (except Thanksgiving and holidays), when the Surf and Turf combo goes for $42; and on Friday nights, when the special is a great prime rib dinner for $38. We tried Legends for dinner a few weeks ago and sampled the superb empanadas as an appetizer (small pastries filled with seasoned beef, fried golden brown and accompanied with jicama slaw and three dipping sauces). Also listed are panko-crusted squash blossoms, crab and shrimp cakes, crispy calamari and Peking duck egg rolls. There’s a nice list of fresh garden salads and a terrific sweet French onion soup.

For your main entrée, there’s something for everyone’s craving. As a savory wintertime treat, enjoy the pot roast served with cheese polenta, or try the broiled rack or lamb or 18-ounce porterhouse steak. Pasta lovers will enjoy the braised beef pancetta tortellini or the clam and shrimp penne pasta. Also listed are pizzas, grilled salmon, seared sea bass and Vermont macaroni and cheese.
